Lack of Sleep- How It Hurts You


We all know infants and teens need a lot of sleep, because their bodies are changing so rapidly.  But, when we consider adults, and the elderly, we often don’t associate sleep as something we “need”.  Some people are even proud- stating to others, that they only need “5 or 6” hours of sleep.

I recently read a fascinating article regarding our “catastrophic” lack of sleep, and that research shows that it is linked to a host of fatal diseases.  A professor at Berkley states that sleep deprivation affects “every aspect of our biology”.  A lack of sleep has been “linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity and poor mental health among other health problems”.  The article goes on to say that anything less than 7 hours of sleep is bad for our health.  Many view the need for more sleep as a trait of being lazy.  In short, the article states that a lack of sleep is killing us, and that we need to change our view of sleep and get more of it on a regular basis!

HBO Film on Health Crisis in America


HBO: The Weight of the Nation: Films: Main.

I was recently reminded of America’s health crisis when I read an article in our local paper about the top 10 ranked states for childhood obesity.  South Carolina (my state) was ranked 2nd in the nation for childhood obesity, and 10th in the nation for overall obesity.

This is a topic that is difficult to discuss because no one wants to come across as judgmental. However, the percentage of children with diabetes has been on the rise for many years now. Children who are obese, turn into adults who are obese (more often than not). This leads to a whole range of health problems for people of all ages- children turn into adults, and adults turn into seniors. Obesity increases your risk for: diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and even things you wouldn’t even consider…. like pain in the joints from excess weight. Read the rest of this entry »

The Top 10 Causes Of Death In 1900 And 2010..

Are you curious about the primary causes of death in the US in 1900 vs. 2010?  This graph from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list cancer and heart disease as the largest reason for death in 2010.  It is believed that changing life-style habits and diet are the primary reason for this.  It is well-known in the medical community that significant improvements can be made to a person’s health by: eating a healthier diet, increasing your daily exercise, reducing your stress level, stopping smoking, and by taking blood pressure medication (when needed).  What can you do today to reduce your risk for cancer and heart disease?

Young Blood May Hold Key to Reversing Aging –

Can you imagine a time where there is a breakthrough so significant, that there are cures for things like heart disease, Alzheimer’s and even the aging process?  According to this article, research has been done that shows the blood from young mice reverses aging in old mice, rejuvenating their muscles and brains.  If this happens in mice, could this also happen in humans?  Perhaps; but a caution was noted: to wake up old stem cells in older adults may mean they multiply uncontrollably; leading to cancer.  I’ll leave it to scientist to keep pushing onward.  I look forward to an update on this in the years to come.

‘Miracle’ as Mississippi Man Wakes Up in Body Bag

‘Miracle’ as Mississippi man wakes up in body bag at funeral home | Fox News.

A man from Mississippi was pronounced dead by the coroner Wednesday evening around 9pm.  His body was taken to the funeral home and placed in a body bag.  Early Thursday morning (as he was about to be embalmed) he started kicking.  The coroner had only one thing to say “it’s a miracle”.  The coroner believed his pacemaker stopped working and then started again.  What a terrific story.  I have read books and have been told of miracles throughout the years.  I have no doubt they occur.  But… this lead me to learn more about pacemakers.  There is much to know and understand.
