When we consider the most valuable members of our society, do we list the name of a movie or sport star? I think he most valuable members of our society are veterans. We have a long line of family members who fought in wars- The Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWII, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.
My father (who is a Vietnam vet) struggled for years with PTSD. He wouldn’t talk to my mom about it. He’s now around 70 years old and sits alone in a nursing home room. I have no doubt- the war still haunts him. He just tries not to think about it.
Did you know that there are approximately 22 veterans who commit suicide in our country each day? In fact, the numbers are probably higher. Many states do not keep accurate records concerning suicide, nor report their findings. Did you know that 69% of vets who commit suicide are over 50 years old? Many are young- in their early twenties. This is a devastating and heart breaking problem. For more on this topic, please see attached article from CNN.
Never forget to take the time to thank the vets you see.
