Scientists Discover New Culprit Behind Alzheimer’s

A potential cure for Alzheimer’s? Scientists discover new culprit behind brain-wasting disease | Fox News.

If you have a family member who has Alzheimer’s this article might be of interest to you. But, be prepared to read it twice. It is pretty complicated information, but very interesting. Here is an excerpt:
“As a young brain grows, it generates an excess of synapses that will potentially form new neural circuits. However, since too many synapses are created, the brain had to develop a mechanism for eliminating the ones deemed unnecessary.” “Through their research, they found that this synaptic pruning was done by the complement system.” The article goes on to explain more about this system.

It appears that this complement system is well over active in patients with Alzheimers. (Not just Alzheimer’s, but Parkinson’s, MS and Huntington’s). This is quite different from the current, or previous understanding about the causes of neurodegenerative diseases.

This could mean significant changes in the future for individuals with such diseases. I think it is pretty exciting. Read the article for a much better explanation.
